Encanto's crowdfunding campaign: Angel's Share - A Staged Concert
Angel’s Share is the main event of our festival in May 2017. Our “staged” concert combines whisky distillation, Shakespearean acting and enchanting baroque music in a new and exciting way. Now this performance will be seen in Finland for the first time. But we need your help in making this unique experience happen, so we are organising a crowdfunding campaign using the mesenaatti.me platform. Mesenaatti.me makes it easy for individuals, associations and companies to participate in the fundraising for interesting projects, turning them into collaborative projects! You can find our Angel's Share campaign at www.mesenaatti.me/encantoangelsshare. Fi(/u)nd us and be surprised!
What is Angel's Share?
Angel’s Share is not a concert. Or at least it is not only a concert. Instead, it is a performance that wanders between cultures, and on the way mixes astonishing baroque music, Shakespearean drama, dancing and whisky distillation. In the story, we meet an Englishman who has his heart for Scotland, searching for his identity in the crossroads of separate cultures. The spectacle take us on an absurd musical journey from the courtly London culture of Purcell to the pub culture of the Scottish Highlands with its lively fiddle tradition. Whisky has its own part in the play as well. During the evening we witness a musical duel between highbrow culture and pub life, between melancholy and love for life…
The six-person ensemble Urban Strings, along with dancer Nadine Milzner and soprano Julia von Landsberg, unite in this peculiar cultural melting pot. Director Nicola Hümpel “navigates” the concert evening, which is riddled with British humour and even snobbism – very sophisticated, indeed!
Angel’s Share has been seen in Central European concert halls since 2012, and has been met with enthusiasm and rave reviews. Radialsystem V and Nico and the Navigators, who originally got the idea for the show and who partner with the Encanto Festival, are well-known and award-winning pioneers of new concert concepts. This is the first time this performance will be seen in Finland.
Why Angel's Share?
At the Encanto Festival, we believe in having an open mind. By boldly mixing, blending and melting different cultures, art forms, manners and attitudes together, we can find something we did not even know to exist. In Angel’s Share, cultures are mixed not only by the fact that performers come from many countries, but also in the very story of the play. On the other hand, the show binds so-called serious art music with folk music, as well as poetry with intoxication. The show also moves seamlessly across many genres, including musical theatre, dramatic reading, classical concert and a pub spectacle. It is impossible to categorise the production. Still, the audience is safe in their seats and can only relax and enjoy the art realised by skilful performers – without the somewhat serious context of classical music.
The Encanto Festival breathes new life into classical works. The festival programme offers great works from the centuries long gone, but with a modern view which makes this music accessible to people today. The movement is globally known as indie classic, emphasising the artistic freedom from institutions. This kind of art is often imaginative and influential while also incorporating fun and humour.
Finding and trying new things requires courage and a cool head. Angel’s Share’s performers are all world-class professionals who have the guts to throw themselves into something totally unknown. These kind of extraordinary experiences are rarely seen in Finland. At its best, it can inspire Finnish artists to produce more diverse culture – and at the highest level.
And where are all the angels then?
The Angel’s Share in our performance does not refer to anything celestial, but is actually a term which refers to the amount of alcohol that evaporates from the casks during the maturation of whisky. It is also the headline of our metaphorical concert evening. As you know, the most invisible and ethereal moments of our lives are often the ones which count the most…
