Piroska Baranyay


Piroska Baranyay (cello and viola da gamba) was born in Budapest into a musical family. She studied at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music with the legendary Ferenc Rados and Csaba Onczay. After completing her doctoral studies there she followed her old interest in early music and went on studying baroque cello with P. Carrai and M. Möllenbeck at the UdK Berlin and later with J. Manson at the RAM London. She won numerous prizes at national competitions and several scholarships. In 2008 she was finalist at the Bach Competition Leipzig and in 2010 she won 3rd prize in the Internationaler Solistenwettbewerb für Alte Musik in Schärding/Brunnenthal.
Piroska is an enthusiastic chamber musician, along with her own group Ensemble Artemisia she regularly performs with leading early music ensembles. She made several cd recordings with Arcangelo, English Baroque Soloists, Ensemble Sanssouci , Hofkapelle Esterhazy, Orfeo Orchestra Budapest. She was principal cellist with Danubia Symphony Orchesta and The English Baroque Soloists and was member of The English Concert. She plays principal with Hofkapelle Esterhazy, Arcangelo, Haydn Philharmonie, Orfeo, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Gabrieli Consort&Players, ABO, Academy of Ancient Music and she regularly appears as a soloist. Between 2014 - 2016 she was teacher cello at the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Music.
